Let's Wine About It!
Wine Spectator Magazine Honors Marcel’s with Best of Award of Excellence, 2011
Marcel’s restaurant is one of only six restaurants to receive Wine Spectator’s coveted Best of Award of Excellence for 2011 in Washington, DC. For the better part of 20 years, executive chef and owner Robert Wiedmaier has graced the best kitchens of our nation’s capital; the last decade in his own establishment of Marcel’s on Pennsylvania Avenue. Wiedmaier and his team regularly top the best-of lists including Zagat’s 2011 Washington D.C./Baltimore Restaurant Survey for Best Restaurant in Food.
Wine and Beverage Director Ramón Narváez is a “genius sommelier” according to Zagat, and travels the world’s best wine regions to seek out wine and winemakers that he finds brilliant and inspirational for Marcel’s and Wiedmaier’s four other restaurants, Brasserie Beck, Brabo, Mussel Bar and the Tasting Room. Narváez visits the vineyards and meets the farmers, handles the grapes and taste vintages before they are even bottled. Each and every bottle of the 600 plus selections on Marcel’s rarified list is carefully picked to delight the most discriminating palate. His educational fervor extends to the general public, as well as his own staff, and he offers wine dinners, classes, and tastings with a focus on seasonality, particular regions, and various wine styles. Narváez sees his position as a knowledgeable wine enthusiast who supports the flair, vision and creativity of chef Robert Wiedmaier.
Started in 1981, the Wine Spectator restaurant awards program includes The “Best Of” Award of Excellence, created to give special recognition to restaurants that clearly exceed the requirements of the Award of Excellence; whose lists are complete with accurate wine information, display vintage depth including wines available by the glass, and show outstanding breadth across diverse wine regions. Honored with this award, Marcel’s restaurant joins company with Adour at the St. Regis and CityZen as the District of Columbia’s top wine restaurants.
Marcel’s restaurant is open to the public seven days per week. To view the menus, visit www.marcelsdc.com. You may also call the restaurant at (202) 296-1166.
