Chef Robert Wiedmaier’s Restaurant Marcel’s Named One of the
“World’s Top Restaurants” by Zagat
Some travel the globe to find the best cuisine there is, but lucky for us here in Washington, DC, we have it in our own backyard! After being named #1 in the nation’s capital in “America’s Top 25 Restaurants in 25 Cities” and the Top Restaurant for Food in 2011, chef Robert Wiedmaier’s flagship restaurant, Marcel’s, can now add that they are one of the “World’s Top Restaurants” to their already notable accomplishments according to Zagat.
Scoring a 29 out of a perfect 30 for food, Marcel’s is one of only 20 restaurants to receive the high score (no restaurant received a perfect 30). Listed among such highly respected names as Alinea in Chicago, Le Bernardin in New York City, and Spondi in Athens, Greece, Marcel’s can now truly call themselves a worldwide destination restaurant.
Marcel’s, where the labor-intensive classic cuisine demands a very high chef-to-dinner guest ratio, reflects Wiedmaier’s European heritage. Wiedmaier is a Full-Circle Chef – from stalking a deer, to biding his time in a duck blind, to waiting for the fish to bite — he completes the cycle by preparing for dinner the very animal he faces in nature within his own home, and extends that philosophy to his restaurants.
Pairing Robert’s highly skilled and thoughtful cuisine is Wine and Beverage Director Ramón Narváez, who has been described as a “genius sommelier” by Zagat. He ensures that the philosophy of top quality, harmony, and service remains a common thread from dish to glass.
Perhaps the most trusted name in dining, Zagat’s surveys have been called “the gastronomic bible” (Wall Street Journal,) since debuting in 1979. Rankings are based on the Zagat Survey, which compiles the shared opinions of thousands of consumers – thought to be more accurate than the assessments of single restaurant critics.
